Open a backup bank account - Step 1

Although the banks know what they are doing is wrong, in some cases banks have threatened to close peoples accounts and some actually have once they have paid out what they owe, so its very important to have a backup account ready before you start this process. Even though the financial ombudsmen has ruled against the banks for this, they are still doing it in some cases. If it happens to you, have your backup account in place and then complain to the ombudsmen, you may be entitled to further compensation.

Claiming your charges back does not impact your credit rating however your bank may keep their own notes about you possibly being a difficult customer, so this could make it harder for you to get other products from that bank, but if they behave like that, would you want to give them more custom anyway?

  2. Karen Says:

I say no, you’re not. You should have ensured that you had the money in there to cover your contracted direct debits. Jesus, everyone wants spoon feeding!

  5. Loz Says:

Well Karen I completely disagree with you, fair enough people should be happy with paying charges that reflect the cost to the banks that deal wih the overdrawals but not for the charges being so excessive for their own profits! You must be in banking to be so unsympathetic towards anyone being forced to pay such excessive fees!

  6. Peter Says:

Karen, the law says that banks can charge, but it has to be in proportion with how much it has actually cost them to take the appropriate action. To charge £30 for something that costs a bank £5 is not within the law I’m afraid.
