You need to discover all the fines you’ve incurred by each bank or credit card provider over the last six years. Even accounts you’ve closed and no longer use. Most people haven’t kept all their statements for six years? So its a case of writing to each bank and requesting details of charges, you’ve a legal right to do this under the Data Protection Act.
Banks are legally allowed to charge for this information as they do incur costs for collating this information and sending it over. The maximum they can send is £10, so include a cheque with your request.
To help you with this task, we’ve included a letter template for you to download here.
The bank only has a 40 day limit to respond to your letter. If you don’t get a reply, follow up with a phone call and then report it to the Information Commissioner regarding a breach of conduct.
Your entitled to interest on every charge you’ve incurred at a rate of 8% (not compounded), so add this to your initial claim. The bank will probably try to negotiate a settlement with you, so it makes sense to start at the highest point you can.

If you think the charges are unfair, you could have banked with a different company. After all, you have a choice. And you should read the terms and conditions BEFORE you open your account, and certainly BEFORE you decide to illegally remove funds that you don’t have, go into the red, and get charged.
Of course, there are legitimate reasons for refunding ‘mistakes’ regarding charges but on the whole I’m fed up hearing about those that seek refunds due to their own poor management of their money. I’ve never ever been charged because simply, I don’t take money from my bank if it’s not in my bank account.

Kevin I really don’t think there is any reason to be so abusive! Everyone is entitled to an opinion, and it happens that mine is the same as yours (where bank charges are concerned) but less of the language.
My bank have charged me about £800 now and half of that was due to fraud on my account from someone in Dubai, is this my fault? I think not. Banks should be responsible for your money, after all, they are looking after it for you. I should not be penalised for their incompetence, and so will be claiming mine back.
